The Science Behind It

3 Main Reasons

There's a biomechanical reason elite coaches have used heel elevation for decades — and it works from your very first rep.

Improves Squat Depth Immediately

Limited ankle mobility restricts how deep you can squat. Heel elevation reduces the dorsiflexion demand at the ankle, allowing your knees to travel forward naturally so you can hit full depth from rep one.

📄 Study Ankle dorsiflexion demand significantly decreased with heel elevation — particularly advantageous for those with limited ankle mobility. Lu et al., MDPI Bioengineering, 2022

Increases Quad Activation

Heel elevated squats shift more load onto your quads and glutes — the muscles that are supposed to be doing the work. More quad activation means stronger legs, better knee tracking, and more effective training.

📄 Study Significant increases in vastus lateralis (quad) activation observed when heels were elevated during barbell squats. MDPI Systematic Review, 2025

Keeps Your Torso More Upright

Excessive forward lean during squats is one of the most common form breakdowns. Heel elevation allows your torso to stay upright naturally, reducing trunk lean and keeping your center of mass balanced over your feet.

📄 Study Higher wedge height produced a more upright trunk position during back squats — the steepest wedge showed the greatest reduction in trunk lean. Monteiro et al., Human Movement, 2022

The SquatWedgie Stack is a 10° heel elevation slant board designed for athletes who need a lower angle of elevation for squats, deadlifts, and other lower body movements. It provides the benefits of heel elevation including improved squat depth, more upright torso position, and better knee tracking, at a gentler slope that suits athletes with less ankle restriction or those who prefer a more subtle lift.

The SquatWedgie Stack also functions as the add-on component to the SquatWedgie PRO system. When stacked on top of the SquatWedgie Base, it creates a 25° combined slope, giving you the full range of elevation in one system.

The SquatWedgie Stack is 24 inches wide, 14 inches long, and 3 inches tall with a fixed 10° slope. It weighs 30 pounds, providing the mass and stability needed to hold position under heavy barbell loads. The 24-inch wide platform accommodates both narrow and moderate squat stances without needing to adjust foot position.

Yes. The SquatWedgie Stack is a fully functional 10° heel elevation slant board on its own and is the ideal choice for athletes who want a lower elevation angle. At 10°, it provides meaningful heel elevation for squats and deadlifts without the steeper incline of the Base or PRO, making it well suited for athletes with moderate ankle mobility or those who are newer to heel elevated training.

It can also be stacked on top of the SquatWedgie Base to create the full SquatWedgie PRO at 25°, giving you maximum elevation when needed.

The key difference is the slope angle. The SquatWedgie Stack has a 10° slope and is ideal for athletes who need less heel elevation or are working up to a steeper incline. The SquatWedgie Base has a 15° slope and is the more popular choice for athletes with moderate to severe ankle mobility restrictions looking for an immediate improvement in squat depth.

Both boards are the same width and length, and both are designed to work together as part of the SquatWedgie PRO system at 25° combined.

Yes. The SquatWedgie Stack works in both orientations. Use it with your heels elevated for squats, split squats, and other lower body movements where an upright torso and deeper knee bend is the goal. Flip it around and use it with your toes elevated for deadlifts, Romanian deadlifts, and standing calf raises where a greater stretch at the bottom of the movement increases muscle activation and range of motion.

The SquatWedgie Stack works for barbell back squats, front squats, goblet squats, split squats, Bulgarian split squats, hack squats, leg press, deadlifts, Romanian deadlifts, and standing calf raises. The 10° slope is particularly well suited for deadlift variations where heel elevation improves hip hinging mechanics and reduces the ankle dorsiflexion required to get into position at the start of the pull.

Yes. Even a 10° heel elevation slant board significantly reduces the ankle dorsiflexion required during squats and lower body pulling movements. If you struggle with forward lean during squats, your knees caving inward, or reaching adequate depth without discomfort, limited ankle mobility is likely the cause. The SquatWedgie Stack addresses this directly, allowing you to train with proper mechanics while mobility improves over time.

Every athlete trains differently and the right squat wedge depends on your stance, mobility, and goals. Take our quiz and we will match you to the perfect heel elevation tool in under a minute.
